This book provides an overall information on the socio-economic characteristics of swine producers, motivational drivers to keep pigs, production systems, feeding & slurry management, breed features, reproductive performance, breeding practice, breed selection criteria and constraints in the swine production value chain. The studies' findings presented in this book are compared with the findings of similar studies conducted in different African countries so that the overall information presented in this book can represent the overall image of the swine production and its management practices in Africa.
The book is divided into four chapters. CHAPTER 1 provides the overall summary of the three different studies. In CHAPTER 2, the socio-economic features of the swine producers are discussed. CHAPTER 3 presents the swine production systems, feeding & slurry management, herd administration, and constraints in the value chain. Finally, in CHAPTER 4, breed features, reproductive performance, breeding practice, breed selection criteria and herd replacement are presented.
