THE EFFECT OF AUDIO-VISUAL AIDS IN TEACHING ECONOMICS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ANKPA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KOGI STATE.

CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION1.1 Background to the StudyAudio Visuals can be seen as specialist electronic materials thatdistributes high quality audio and visual sounds/videos. Simply meanspossessing both sound and visual component, such as slide-tape presentations,films, television programmes, church services and live theatre productions.Business presentations are also often audio visuals. Computer-based audiovisual equipment are often used in education, with many schools anduniversities, installing projection equipment and using interactive whiteboardtechnology (Barman and Charles 2014). The New York City Department ofEducation (2017), defines audio-visual materials as instructional materials suchas Video tapes, Laser discs, Audio cassettes, Record/Compact Discs and otherMulti-media type instructional materials that have met the guidelinesestablished by the Office of the Chancellor, and are approved for purchase bythe New York City Public Schools. On their part, Business Dictionary (2015)views Audio-Visuals as non-paper educational or promotional, such ascassettes, CDs, DVDs, video tapes and Laser Discs. Audio-visual aids aresensate tools used in teaching and as avenues for learning, they are plannededucational materials that appeal to the senses of students and quicken learningfor clear understanding (Audio-Visual Aids Blog, 2010), audio visual aids, isreferred as the most modern or the most recent teaching aid such as films, film1 strips, radio and television. Audio-visual aids in the classroom for teaching canhelp teaching methods to improve student comprehension (Audio-Visual E-book, 2015). This is because it is generally accepted that the best learning takesplace when the greatest number of senses is stimulated. The use of these devicesor audio-visual aids stimulates the greatest number of senses and stimulatesboth eyes and ears in learning process. For this reason, good teachers alwaysused devices or audio-visual aids in teaching and learning process. Audio-visualdevices, generally, is an incentive introduced into the method of teaching for thepurpose of stimulating the students and developing understanding throughexperiencing. Audio-visual aids are produced, distributed and used as plannedcomponents of educational programmers which helps in the process of learning.From the foregoing, one can see that audio-visual aids are materials andinstruments that stimulate learner's, senses, especially the senses of hearing andseeing; and improved students’ comprehension. According to Academia.com(2014), in their empirical findings; audio-visual aids are used in some privateSecondary Schools in some forms, especially the senior forms, which enhancesstudent’s academic performance in examinations. To support the above, Faizal(2015) in his empirical research showed that 100% of teachers use audio-visualaids during classroom teaching, in private schools in Pakistan; and this enhancesstudent’s performances.
