SURE-P A STRATEGY FOR JOB CREATION IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT A job creation strategy to provide 10,000 jobs in two years has been developed by the ministry in collaboration with the commonwealth. The recent declaration by the national Bureau of Statistics that almost 100 million Nigerians live on less than $1 per day succinctly describes the enormity of the fundamental flows in all the strategies deployed by successive governments in the country in tackling the issue of poverty alleviation and job creation. Furthermore, the youth empowerment and job creation porgrammes, be it at the federal, state and local government levels, need a major repackaging in the face of the current-realities and the repeated cases of widespread corruption in the country. The country is desirous of result and that demands a paradigm shift in strategies.  This is a rare opportunity for the government and the co-ordinating minister to prove the cynics wrong that where there is will and purpose, there will surely be results. The enormous potential in the country’s agricultural sector needs to be exploited and formation of co-operative societies should be encouraged as a bias for accessing government funding with an intrinsic plan that should involve massive mechanization programme and remodeling of processes and procedures.  Nigeria in the foreseeable future can become a net exporters of agricultural produce with a sustainable action plan.
