ABSTRACT

This research work examines the impact of the MDGs on Poverty Alleviation in Nigeria followingsome progress on the achievement of the MDGs, given the modest recovery of theNigerian economy since the 1990s and the various efforts of all stakeholders.Although, poverty was till pervasive, and child mortality and maternal healthstill precarious, yet literacy level were rising, gender equality andempowerment of women are improving. HIV/AIDs pandemic, malaria and othercommunicable disease reducing. In all, the rate of achievement was slow inNigeria with incredible financial bases and capacity.  However, the constraint are many unemployment, poor governance and implementation of programmes, corruption, inadequacy andmisapplication of fund, leading to lack of value for money. Others are poorinfrastructure to aid production and promote domestic trade, betterco-ordination of activities among the security problems in the treasure storeof Nigeria (the Niger-Delta). Although, Nigeria has made appreciable progresson Goal 2 and 8, as well as some partial progress on Goal 3 and 6, but facesserious challenges on Goal 4, 5 and 7 and some indicator of Goal 6. There is aneed to consolidate on area where progress has been made while concrete effortsis required to get the country back on tract in the areas where it facesserious challenges. This underscores the need to address implementationbottlenecks and defect in current policies. It is pertinent to note that toignite the desire and irreversible progress towards attaining the MDGs targetsneed coordinated efforts, and adequate funding and focused implementation. However, more efforts are needed to capture relevant data on all activitiesabout the implementation of the MDGs from the three tiers of governmentregularly, that way assessing the progress of MDGs will be more practical, robust and total. Nevertheless, the secondary method of data collection andevaluative method was employed in this research work especially data from theNational Planning Commission (NPC), Office of the Senior Special Assistant tothe President on MDGs (OSSAP), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS),National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) and the United NationsDevelopment Programme (UNDP), textbooks, newspapers, internets etc. Finally, government should provide opportunities for greater involvement of the privatesector, civil society organizations and development partners in theimplementation, monitoring and evaluation of MDGs – related projects
