Constituents of Celery (Apium graveolens ) Seed Oil and its Biological Activity

Abstract This study was aimed to extract the fixed oil of Apium graveolens through the process of maceration with normal hexane. The oil was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The antimicrobial activity was also estimated. The GC-MS analysis of the studied oil showed the presence of 45 constituents. Major components are: i) 9-Octadecenoic acid methyl ester (56.04%) ii) 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid methyl ester (13.47%) iii) Hexadecanoic acid methyl ester(12.05%) iv) Methyl stearate(4.69%) The oil showed partial antimicrobial activity against some test organism.
