Community Management of Acute Malnutrition in Katsina State, Nigeria: A Report From 2010 To 2013

ABSTRACT

 The  Community  Management  of  Acute  Malnutrition  (CMAM )  is a  communitybased  approach  involves  in  timely  detection  of  severe  acute malnutrition  (SAM)  in  a  community.  This  is  followed  by  the  provision  of  treatment  (Readynutrientdense  foods)  for  those  without  medical  comp toUse  Therapeutic  Foods  (RUTFs)  or  other lications  with  at  their  respective  homes.  This  study  was  aimed  to  review  and  evaluate  the CMAM program (performance  and international  indicators)  in  13  LGAs  and  80  CMAM  sites  of  Katsina  State  (Nigeria)  from  its  ince 2010  down  to  2013  using ption  in  the  year quantitative  evaluation.  CMAM  data  of  13  LGAs  and  80  CMAM  sites  of  Katsina  State,  Nigeria  was  collected  for  the program  evaluation.  The  data  was  collected  using  desk  review  from  the  Zonal  nutrition  data  base.  The  collected  data  was  analy zed  using  Microsof excel.  Frequency  tables  were  generated.  Bar  charts  and  line  graphs  were  subsequently  created  to  aid  visual  appreciation  of  th t e  progress  recorded  so far.  A  significant  increase  in  terms  of  admission  and  discharges  (cure)  in  the  study  area  between  the  year 2010  and  2013  was  observed.  This  tallies with  significant  increase  in  RUTF  supplies  to  the  study  area.  The  defaulters  and  death  rate  recorded  during  the  year  2010  to 2013  has  reduced significantly.  They  were  below  international  indicators  for  the  defaulte rs  (
